During the last two years, 1930, 1931, an experiment in Rural Adult Education has been carried out in Canterbury, New Zealand. A motor car has been fitted up as a Travelling Library, and put in charge of a graduate of Canterbury College, who has attempted to foster the cultural development of certain selected rural communities, using the library, the Study Group, the Lecture, and other means, as tools in an experimental scheme of rural community adult education. While it is still somewhat early to draw conclusions and assess results coming from this experiment, a certain amount of information, both qualitative and quantitative, has been gathered that provides a basis for further development of the experimental scheme, and confirms as valuable, many of the steps already taken. The purpose of this thesis is to review the work of the two years, and to discuss directions which the experiment might take in the future.
