Abstract

Antarctica is becoming more and more open to the general population. Barriers to access are decreasing, and technology is enabling a safer and more home-like environment for personnel based at a number of stations. Furthermore, more international scientific collaboration is occurring each year in Antarctica (Dastidar, 2007); this, combined with greater ease of transport within the continent, means there is likely to be increasing numbers of personnel visiting bases and field camps run by other programmes. This report looks at the issues and current practises with regards to selection, training, and transnational cooperation. It also briefly examines post-deployment adaption, and the possibility of using this for selection and training in future. It is recommended that further research be carried out in a number of areas relating to selection and training of Antarctic personnel, specifically around the success factors of Antarctic training, the implications of ethnic diversity and international cooperation, and the reasons behind both positive and negative post-deployment adaptions.
