dc.description.abstract | An experimental method has been developed for observing the infrared spectra of molecules adsorbed on germanium surfaces. The method involves measuring small changes that occur in the spectra of evaporated germanium films as a result of gas adsorption onto the films. The interaction of carboxylic aids with germanium surfaces has been studied; the observed spectra are interpreted in terms of formation of surface germanium carboxylates. The oxidation of germanium surfaces has been found to involve formation of at least three distinct species. A preliminary study has been made of alcohol adsorption; the observed spectra suggest hydrogen bonding of undissociated alcohol molecules to the surface. The limitations of the experimental method are discussed. | en |
