Abstract
Hydrogen production by water electrolysis is an area of growing interest, especially when coupled to intermittent renewable energy generation. The green hydrogen produced is a versatile energy carrier and is essential for industrial decarbonization, playing a critical role in sectors where direct electrification is challenging. Among the different water electrolysis technologies, anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is seen as especially attractive as it combines many of the positive features from both proton exchange membrane (PEM) and alkaline electrolysis. Specifically, by using an ion-conductive membrane as the electrode separator, AEMWE can be paired with variable renewable energy sources (similar to PEM).
