This work investigates how black holes can be described in terms of different definitions of horizons. Global definitions in terms of event horizons and Killing horizons are contrasted with local definitions in terms of trapping horizons and dynamical horizons. The discussion is framed in the context of the laws of black hole thermodynamics.en
