Student beliefs about mathematics are difficult to access and categorize. This paper discusses one method used in an attempt to mitigate this issue. As part of a larger study into Year 5 and Year 6 students’ beliefs about the nature of mathematics as well as their selfbeliefs about the domain, a subgroup of 185 students completed a drawing task. The metaphors used in these drawings are explored as a way of accessing, grouping, and understanding the range of beliefs held by these students.en
