This paper reflects on young New Zealanders’ narratives about energy use. The paper is offered as a contribution to a wider discussion of interdisciplinary research methods about energy stories and narratives through time, to support more “imaginative and open thinking” about sustainable transformation. Discussion is set in the context of a story about a successful energy protest and a major national disaster. The strengths and limitations of online comparative survey instruments are briefly reviewed in the course of this initial reflection on how young people talk about energy use over time and why change in energy use happens or fails to happen in a country which, despite being a significant generator of hydro power also has one of the highest rates of greenhouse gas emissions per capital in the OECD.en
