In this essay, I examine countries where the United States has attempted to impose democracy. My data is limited to countries that have experienced interventions by the USA (or strong military support) and some subsequent level of democratization. I have chosen seven cases in which the United States has intervened and at least some period of institutional democratization has occurred, according to the Polity IV Index. My goal is not to test any one overarching question, but I am interested to explore the relationship between the presence of democratic institutions and the presence of rights (civil liberties, the right to security). I’ve chosen seven cases. I would argue that they are the cases that mostly fit the mode of countries that had a distinct period of intervention by the United States and at least some institutional democratization for a sustained period.: Grenada (The Model) Panama (The Near Model)en
