Bioprospecting is occurring in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. There is no clear jurisdiction that currently governs bioprospecting in the Antarctic. Treaty parties are just beginning to discuss bioprospecting and it possible implications at various forums but there has been no agreement to date that it is a problem and a response is needed.
