Abstract

Rising employee stress coupled with the additional stressors due to the pandemic makes it important for organizations to facilitate employee resource development as resources allow employees to cope with stress, flourish and perform well at work. Drawing on job demands-resources and transactional stress theory and using meta-analysis, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of individual-level resource building interventions on positive employee and job outcomes including employee wellbeing, work engagement and job performance. The overall effect sizes related to each outcome were calculated separately for samples that used a single group pretest-posttest design and a pretest-posttest control design. With respect to the samples that had a single group pretest-posttest design, the effects of resource building interventions were positive, small and significant on employee wellbeing, work engagement and job performance. On the other hand, for the samples that had a pretest-posttest-control design, the effects of resource building interventions were small-to-medium on employee wellbeing, small for work engagement and small but non-significant for job performance. Overall, the results of the present study suggested that individual-level resource building interventions are a viable option for increasing employee wellbeing and work engagement.
