Abstract

The topic of matching strucrural reliability to the needs and behaviour of the community which I intend to discuss is one which deserves continuing debate and which I believe would have appealed to Professor Hopkins. It is a subject which needs to be addressed by the profession if we are to continue to make progress with economy in use of resources and yet with innovation. It is also one seldom rationally considered by society as a whole and fraught with misconceptions and woolly thinking.
