Grange, Elise2017-08-172017-08-172004http://hdl.handle.net/10092/14003This review covers building materials, design and construction methods used for ‘Bases’ in the Antarctic, from the heroic age to today. The main structures concentrated on are Shackletons Hut at Cape Royds, New Zealand’s Scott Base and the Australian bases collectively. The review looks over time how Scott Base has evolved with regards to building materials and design and looks at how buildings in Antarctica have changed the way of ‘life as we know it’. To provide an understanding about building in Antarctica I have included a section of Antarctica’s environment and considerations that need to be taken into account when designing a building south. Safety considerations impact on the design of buildings in this environment, therefore I felt it necessary to include a section on this.enAll Rights ReservedAntarctic bases: Building materials, methods and designTheses / Dissertations
