Structural studies of transition metal compounds

The crystal and molecular structures of six compounds are described in this thesis. Of the six, four are cobalt carbonyl cluster compounds, Co₅(Co)₁₅C₃H, Co₆(Co)₁₈C₄,Co₈(Co)₂₄C₆ and C₆H₅CCo₃(Co)₆(C₆H₃(CH₃)₃). These compounds are chemically and structurally related to one another and may regarded as derivatives of methinyl tricobalt enneacarbonyls containing the group -CCo₃(C0 )₉. The fifth compound is a cobalt (III) triethylenetetramine glycinato complex, (( - )₅₈₉-β₁-Co(( trien)(gly) )r₂1/2H₂O, containing equal numbers of the diastereoisomers Δ-β₁-(RR)-Co(( trien)(gly))²⁺and Δ-β₁-(RS)-Co(( trien)(gly))²⁺. The last compound is a novel iridium nitrosyl dimer, (Ir(NO)(P(C₆H₅)₃))₂)O.C₆H₆. Succeeding sections of this chapter contain some background chemical and structural material on the compounds. A final section serves as introduction to a chapter on the University of Canterbury computing system for X-ray structure analysis.
