Abstract

In our report we have discussed aspects related to building design for ensuring the safe escape of occupants from a burning building. The occupants must be protected from the effects of fire and smoke. We have focused our attention on multi-storey buildings as the principles involved can be readily applied to all buildings. The most important consideration is the safety of life. Therefore the first principle is to ensure that there is adequate provision for speedy and safe escape in case of emergency. Despite the existence of fire safety regulations, the danger of life loss in fires is ever present.
