Of the many factors influencing the solubility of a salt, one of the most important is the dielectric constant of the solvent medium. In an attempt to derive a quantitative relationship between the dielectric constant and solubility, use has been made of the Born theory which regards the process of solution of an ion as being purely an electrostatic process.
