Location: The area described in this thesis is known as the Waiho district and lies to the south-west of the town of Waimate in South Canterbury, covering approximately 100 square miles. It is included within parts of four N.Z.M.S. 1 Sheets: S118 (Hakataramea), S119 (Waimate), S127 (Duntroon) and S128 (Waitaki). Grid references are given in Plate I (at end of thesis). Road access across the central part of the mapped area is by State Highway 87, and several minor roads provide easy access to most other parts.
