Measurements and observations of plant morphology, growth and reproduction of four subalpine trees and/or shrubs, the deciduous Hoheria glabrata and the evergreen Olearia ilicifolia, Senecio bennettii and Dracophyllum travexsii were carried out at Arthur's Pass National. Climate records and soil data provide an outline of the general physical environment in the sites occupied by these species.
