The enquiry which is the subject of this thesis arose out of my previous studies concerning the development, mental and physical, of children from infancy to maturity, and had for its original purpose the comparisons of responses of children between the ages 11 and 14 years to their school environment with the corresponding responses of children from 14 to 16 years of age. The project had not advanced far however, before it became evident that the younger children attending Primary schools, were working under vastly different conditions from those of children in the secondary school. Owing, therefore, to the impossibility of isolating the effects of this change of environment the research took a slightly different direction, finally emerging as an Enquiry into the Effect upon Children of the Transition from Primary to Secondary Schools.
