This thesis is a study of the medium of Chinese snuff bottles as objects of social significance; valued both for their connection to materials of prestige in Chinese history and for their efficacy as objects of exchange, especially within political relationships. It is the first study of the snuff bottles in Canterbury Museum’s Rewi Alley Collection and demonstrates the continuation of the social life of snuff bottles as objects of exchange, assembled and donated for the purposes of cultural diplomacy.
