User interfaces for casual users
The first part of this report presents various ideas and principles in human-computer interaction (HCI) and relates them to the casual use situation. Much research and literature on the topic deals with HCI in general, particularly software designed for more long-term use, although some material relates directly to the novice user. As part of the study of interfaces for casual users a few science exhibits were observed in a science centre environment. Their use is discussed in Chapter 3 with comments on their suitability and effectiveness. Chapter 4 discusses the details of a small science display that was developed to investigate the design process, particularly when designing for the novice user. Various alternative interfaces were considered, and Chapter 5 reports on some brief evaluation experiments with them.
