Abstract

A current rise in remote work has also been met with a rise in desire for meaningful work. Backlash from mandatory return to work policies after working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted considerations about the remote worker experience, including questions regarding whether and how these workers derive a sense of meaning. This study aimed to qualitatively explore how remote workers experience meaningful work despite the known challenges and social barriers. The Map of Meaning (Lips-Wiersma & Morris, 2011) was used as a framework for this research to assess remote worker experiences across various sources of meaning and the extent to which meaningful work is undermined by or arises from characteristics unique to a remote work environment. Eleven fully remote workers were interviewed about their experiences of remote work and their sources of meaning in that work mode. The interview script was based on the Comprehensive Meaningful Work Scale items developed from the foundational Map of Meaning. The findings indicated the four main pathways of meaningful work validated in co-located worker populations, ‘unity with others,’ ‘service to others,’ ‘expressing full potential,’ and integrity with self,’ were also sources of meaning for remote workers, though operationalized in somewhat distinct ways. The overarching contextual dimensions of ‘inspiration,’ ‘reality,’ and ‘balancing tensions’ were found to apply differently to remote workers and suggestions were made to adapt quantitative assessments of meaningful work accordingly when surveying remote workers. Organisations play an important part in enabling meaningful experiences for remote workers by providing appropriate opportunities and avenues for remote workers to be included and acknowledged.
