Abstract

Wellington International Airport Limited (WIAL) has expressed its desire to gauge the magnitude of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions associated with Wellington Airport's routine operation. This research has established that 70,359.55 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent units {CO2e) were generated by routine operations over the FY2016-2017 period. External sources of emissions, relating to aircraft landing-take-off (LTO) cycle operation, aircraft auxiliary power unit operations and passenger surface access were the leading sources of emissions, generating a cumulative 95.26% of Wellington Airport's total operational emissions. Internal WIAL Company-relat ed sources were responsible for only 3.26% of airport-wide emissions. This equates to a WIAL company attributable share of emissions of 0.00040 t CO2e per passenger. The usage of Ground Power Units (GPU), Recycled Aggregate Pavements (RAP) and the installation of a solar PV system were explored to assess their viability and emissions reduction potentials. While all solutions were deemed to be viable, cumulative emissions reduction potential was found to be only 1.67% of airport-wide FY2016-2017 emissions totals.
