This work considers how English speakers enter and exit conversations. A model is created to account for how people achieve this. This model considers both speakers' supposed intuitions and the regularities of their conversation, yet does not proscribe the variability that can and does occur. This work assumes that people commence and conclude conversations by means of oral formulae. Hence, soap operas are used as a source of data as they are highly formulaic in their various levels of structure thereby providing data rich in the oral formulae of exits and entrances.
