Detailed Tree and Building Cover and Canopy Height Distribution for Wellington (2022)
Executive Summary: Tree canopy cover was previously mapped for Wellington in a 2021 canopy cover report. Likewise, the National Topographic Office previously mapped building cover. This tree canopy and building cover was clipped to various boundaries of interest to provide a more detailed description of the distribution of tree and building cover. Tree cover was clipped to public and private land areas, as well as, roads, parks, Significant Natural Areas, and Statistical Area 2 boundaries. For areas covered by trees, canopy was split into 2 m height categories such that canopy height distribution could be described. Tree cover was 12% greater in Wellington’s public lands (37.09%), than in its private land areas (25.12%). In addition to greater tree cover, public land was characterised by relatively less short statured (< 6 m) canopy and relatively more medium-statured (6–14 m) canopy than private land. Tree canopy cover was lowest in roads, at 18.54%, while parks had 47.38% and SNAs had 55.9% canopy cover. Roads had proportionally more small-statured canopy and proportionally less large statured (> 14 m) canopy than parks. Tree cover throughout Wellington’s Statistical Area 2 boundaries ranged from 1.6–57.8%.
