    Abstract

I decided to make a study of the history of the Merivale-Papanui Rugby Football Club for two reasons; firstly, because I was a member of this Club and, therefore, have a personal interest in the Club's history, and secondly, because of the information gained would be useful in the production of a souvenir during the Club's ninetieth anniversary in 1972.

To this and I have attempted to write a history that is both historically accurate and interesting. My main problem has been to assess accurately something I am automatically prejudiced in favour of. However, when selecting my material I came to the conclusion that the history that would be most interesting to the Club member was also that which was of most historical interest.
